최근 2년동안 네 차례나 가격을 대폭 인상하는 바람에 건축업자(builders)와 시멘트 회사 (cement firms) 간에 갈등이 심화되고 있다(conflict has intensified)는 문장으로 기사는 시작한다.

 

 

영어 발음이 한글식 발음과 같은 경우가 드문데 cement 는 시멘트로 동일하다. 단, 영어발음할 땐 '멘'에 강세가 있다.

builder는 건축회사 또는 건축업자를 말한다.

hike는 동사로 하이킹하다일텐데 전혀 다른 뜻도 있다. 이 기사에서 보면 어떤 대상의 가격을 대폭인상하다라고 할 때도 쓰인다!

Last Friday, Sungshin Cement  sent a letter to ready-mixed concreate truckers notifying its plan to increase cement prices by 14.3 percent in July.

=>  ready-mixed라는 단어가 보이는데 무슨뜻인가 하고 구글에 돌려보니, ready-mixed concreate가 '레미콘'이다..! 레미콘이 이런 뜻이었다...!

 

 

 

 

국어사전을 찾아보면 레미콘은 이런 뜻이다.

=> 여기서 operating 이라고 -ing형이 쓰인 줄 알았는데 그게 아니라 operating losses 라는 것 자체가 '영업손실'이라는 표현이다.

 

 

have yet to announce는 아직 발표하지 않았다는 의미다. not 없이 부정의 의미를 담을 수 있는가보다.

=> 시멘트 업체측은 치솟는 전기료 때문에 그들의 제품 가격을 인상하지 않을 수 없었다고 주장하지만, 건축업자들은 그말에 근거가 없다는 입장이다. 역청탄의 국제가격이 1년전보다 3분의 1가량 낮아졌다는 것을 고려하면 말이 안된다는 것이다.

 

어떤 과정에 쓰이는 것인지는 언급되어 있지 않아서 모르겠지만 역청탄이 시멘트를 만들 때 쓰이는 모양이다.
